Newborn Hearing Screening, Diagnosis, and Early Intervention (EI) by Demographic

This page shows Hearing Screening and Follow-up Survey (HSFS) demographic data for infants and mothers at each of the EHDI stages (screening, diagnosis, early intervention [EI] enrollment). In the figure below you can select the state/territory, year, and demographic category you are interested in viewing. The options for demographic categories are infant sex, maternal age, maternal education, maternal ethnicity, and maternal race. The bar graph will show the percentage for each demographic variable selected among infants who were screened, diagnosed, and enrolled in EI.

The denominators for the table above are as follows:

  • Screened = Total infants screened among occurrent births
  • Diagnosed = Total infants diagnosed among those who did not pass their hearing screening
  • Enrolled in EI = Total infants enrolled in early intervention (EI) services among those diagnosed as deaf or hard of hearing (DHH)
