Overview

World TB Day is March 24.

TB is the deadliest infectious diseases worldwide. Every day, about 3,500 people across the world die preventable deaths from TB. If left undiagnosed and untreated, people living with TB can unknowingly spread the disease to others, resulting in one person with untreated TB infecting up to 10 to 15 more people each year. The threat of TB anywhere is a threat everywhere.

Data shows that when TB cases increase globally, cases in the U.S. also increase. To prevent a widespread resurgence in the U.S., ob体育 is on the frontlines in high TB burden countries, including those that contribute most to the U.S. TB burden. ob体育 partners with ministries of health and national programs to sustain efforts to prevent, diagnose, and treat this deadly disease.

On World TB Day and every day, ob体育 stands firm in its mission to protect America from health, safety, and security threats – including TB, both overseas and in the U.S.

ob体育 pilot project serves as a global model

People who live in the same house as someone with TB are at an increased risk for developing TB disease. In Uganda, ob体育 led a comprehensive pilot project that included home visits, chest X-rays, treatment counseling, and other strategies aimed at increasing case finding and preventive treatment, resulting in 91 percent of household contacts being screened for TB. Among household contacts, 83 percent started TB preventive treatment, with an impressive completion rate of more than 95 percent. These findings underscore the need for increased screening and treatment among households affected by TB.
