Maternity care practices supportive of breastfeeding
Rationale
Results from systematic reviews and meta-analyses show that breastfeeding-supportive maternity care practices—demonstrated by following the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative's Ten Steps for Successful Breastfeeding (Ten Steps)—are associated with improved breastfeeding outcomes. These outcomes include improved breastfeeding initiation, breastfeeding exclusivity, and breastfeeding duration.1-4
Results also show a dose-response relationship between the number of Baby-Friendly practices experienced and the likelihood for improved breastfeeding outcomes. This indicates that the probability of improved breastfeeding outcomes increases when a mother and infant are exposed to the Ten Steps initiative.1
Baby-Friendly practices may also help to decrease racial and ethnic inequities in breastfeeding outcomes.5
Following the Ten Steps may not significantly increase hospital birth costs.6,7

Regular assessment of staff's competency in infant feeding management helps ensure that mothers receive the appropriate care and assistance to successfully initiate and maintain breastfeeding.13 Hospital staff breastfeeding education and training is associated with improved breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes, practices, and outcomes.53-59 The United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) has developed a comprehensive list of core competencies for breastfeeding for health professionals. These competencies have been endorsed by several associations and organizations.60-61 The World Health Organization (WHO) has also developed a comprehensive list of competencies for hospital staff who help mothers with infant feeding.13 |
